felix da housecat speaks to addicted

Producer and DJ Felix da Housecat has been one of the biggest names in house and electro since his seminal 2001 album Kittenz and Thee Glitz. August 2009 not only sees the release of his new studio album, He Was King, but it also brings him back to Ibiza to play two hotly-anticipated dates at We Love Space. As soon as we heard, we caught up with Felix to chat about Ibiza, Prince and virginity. Here's what he had to say.

Addicted: Let's kick off by talking about Ibiza. This summer you are playing some dates at We Love Space. What's your favourite thing about playing at Space?

Felix: I love We Love Space because they let me be me and do whatever I want. I can totally be myself there.

Addicted: There is always talk of somewhere being 'the new Ibiza', whether it's Brazil, Greece or somewhere else.  What do you think makes Ibiza unique?

Felix: There is only one Ibiza and it’s still doing its thing after all these years: sin!

Addicted: Tell us about the first time you went to Ibiza.

Felix: Oh my god, the first show I was ever booked to play in Ibiza was Sundissential at Pacha. They put me up in this horrible hotel. I mean, the worst hotel I have ever seen. There was no TV in the room! I called  the promoter to complain and he said I wouldn’t need a TV in Ibiza. Sure enough, he was right! That night my Ibiza virginity was taken; my Ibiza cherry was busted.

Addicted: Apart from Ibiza, where's your favourite place to play in the world?

Felix: I love playing in Spain, Brazil and Mexico.

Addicted: Your new album, He Was King, comes out next month. What were your big influences when composing this album?

Felix: I try never repeat myself on any album I do.  I am always pushing myself creatively to another level.  Sometimes I reach back to old ideas and make them newer and fresher, but I felt really relaxed, stress-free and happy on this record.

Addicted: 'We all wanna be Prince' is the first track on your album. It begs the question ...do you wanna be Prince?!

Felix: I am a leader not a follower so I don’t wanna be him.  I just love him!

Addicted: Aside from tracks on your new album, what tunes are playing when you DJ this summer?

Felix: Felix Cartal, D.I.M. and Ducksauce

Addicted: Looking at your DJ schedule, you're on the road a lot! When do you find time to make music?

Felix: When I am on the road I just find studios and jump into them to work.  I am always trying to stay active and busy.

Addicted: What do you do to chill out?

Felix: Chill – that word does not exist to me.

Addicted: And finally, what is your top tip for anyone coming to Ibiza this summer?

Felix: DRINK A LOT OF WATER

Can't afford a flight to Ibiza? Or perhaps you just can't wait until you get there? Here's the solution: don't go to Ibiza, bring Ibiza to you. That's the promise from a revolutionary new web music service called Awdio. To see if Awdio lives up to this promise, Addicted kicked back at home, turned the volume up, cracked open a bottle of Ibiza Ice and gave it a test drive.

Awdio isn't your average internet radio station. Instead, they broadcast live sets from DJs playing in the top clubs around the world in real time. So even if you are sitting on a remote island in Scotland, you can hear exactly whats going on at the main dance floor in Privilege or the poolside bar at Hotel Es Vive. Addicted reckons live streaming music could be a nice angle for an Ibiza house party!

Some big names are already signed up. Meganite, Supermartxe and Monza are all broadcast live from Privilege, while KM5, Hotel Es Vive, Kanya, Savannah and others all broadcast live music from their bars. If this concept takes off, we are sure more will follow.

Once we had hooked up the MacBook to some speakers, the quality was fantastic. It wasn't quite the same as being in Ibiza, but it was as close as we got on a rainy Monday evening in London.

top five ibiza compilations 2009 - reviewers sign up here

Every summer, every record label and clubbing brand worth their salt produce at least one Ibiza compilation mix. By the end of August, record stores will be stacked full of "Ibiza 2009" CDs. Most feature the same set of tunes, just mixed a bit differently. Which one do you pick? This year, Addicted aims to guide you through the clutter and help you select the Ibiza compilation that's right for you.

How are we going to do that? By recruiting your help! We're looking for five readers who are into house music to help us review five of this summer's top ibiza compilations. In return, we'll send you the five albums for free to keep! We'll just ask you to answer a few short questions about each compilation to feature on the site.

the return of the balearic anthem

Most years, a record emerges that becomes the defining 'Ibiza anthem' of the summer. We've been struggling to identify these over the last couple of years. In 2008 the only track Addicted came home humming was the In Petto remix of Toca's Miracle - and that record is over nine years old. But this year there are two tracks which we think could define summer 2009. They're already in the iTunes dance chart, take a listen and let us know what you think.

I'm Not Alone - Calvin Harris

Mylo's former protégé releases his first piece of new material since Dance Wiv Me, last year's collaboration with Dizzee Rascal that topped the charts for most of summer. I'm Not Alone is a very different beast. The chords are quintessentially Balearic and reminiscent of classics such as Out of the Blue by System F. We challenge you to keep this tune out of your head and your hands out of the air. The mixes by deadmau5 and Tiesto are worth checking out too.

I Remember - deadmau5 and Kaskade

Canadian deadmau5 has been huge on the underground scene for the last couple of years, but this could be his breakthrough tune. The seductive vocals and beat make it equally at home in a club or on a chill-out compilation, and it's the sort of record that begs sea, sun, sand and a really good cocktail.

Its cheesy. Its silly. Its downright cringeworthy. But we received a suggestion to run a feature on records that have 'Ibiza' in the lyrics and simply couldn't say no. They're perfect for setting the party off with a bang on your way to the airport. Just make sure to put a seriously good tune straight after these on your playlist so your musical credibility isn't compromised.

3. People from Ibiza - Sandy Marton
First released in 1982 by Italian disco crooner Sandy Marton, this record has never gone away. Embrace it, it's almost trendy again.

ibiza gets fierce

On June 26th, Ibiza gets Fierce! Every Friday this summer, El Divino will host Fierce Angel’s first major Ibiza residency and Addicted is excited about what lies in store. Fierce Angel was set up two years ago by Mark Doyle after handing over the reins at Hed Kandi. Addicted caught up with Mark to chat about what lies in store.

Addicted: El Divino is a little bit different to the other clubs in Ibiza. Why did you choose to base Fierce Angel here?

MD: Well obviously I brought Hed Kandi to El Divino in 2003 so I’ve always loved the club. The team that work there are really great people and the venue is simply stunning. Other clubs may be bigger or “cooler” but I defy anyone to find a club with a better terrace or a better view. Plus the size makes it possible to have a great night without worrying about delivering massive numbers through the door.

Addicted: Friday is often thought of as one of the quieter nights in Ibiza. Why did you choose the Friday night slot?

MD: Friday was the obvious night to choose as I felt Defected and Hed Kandi will dominate Saturday on this side of the Island. Also when we started Hed Kandi Saturday was deemed the difficult night and we never had a problem there. I think as long as you put on a great night you will bring the people. El Divino is also helping a great deal, this year they are offering drinks for 5 euros …and we will be keeping the door prices sensible as well!

Addicted: If you have to sum up Fierce Angel in one sentence, what’s it all about?

MD: We will be giving the island a night of pure unadulterated fun. The music policy is strictly up-lifting vocal and funky house and its not just about one DJ but the entire team fierce experience. We’ve got some spectacular décor, amazing performances and a superb venue all we need are the people to make it perfect – so I hope everyone will come and have an amazing night out.

5. Cafe del Mar - Energy 52
The record that became even more famous that the San Antonio bar that named it. It's been remixed more times than anyone can count, but the 1997 original is a must.

Last reprised in 2005, Insomnia is an undisputed hands-in-the-air classic. Faithless played a number of sets at Pacha Ibiza last summer and while they currently have no plans to return this year, their music certainly will.

Revamped again for 2009, this is truly a tune that never dies. If you want to do Ibiza like it was in the late 90s, the man himself will be playing selected dates this summer for Cream at Amnesia.

As every Ibiza addict will agree, one of the most exciting things about clubbing on the island is catching sets from DJs whose music is being played all over the place back home. With this in mind, here are a run down of new releases from five artists who will be playing nights at Pacha this summer. Get them on your iPod and get ready!

5. Erick Morillo feat. Deborah Cooper
Subliminal is returning to Pacha on Wednesday nights for their eighth consecutive year hosted by the one and only Erick Morillo. This summer he releases 'I Get Lifted' featuring Deborah Cooper on vocals, giving you a taste of what lies in store.

4. Defected in the House Ibiza 09
Not so much an artist as a promoter and not so much a new tune as a new compilation mix, Addicted couldn't leave Defected off this list. Their annual Ibiza compilations have become legendary for setting the backdrop to the summer and this year they take over the main room at Pacha on Saturday nights. The perfect warm-up mix before you head out clubbing.

3. The Swedish House Mafia feat. Deborah Cox
The Swedish House Mafia, otherwise known as Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Laidback Luke, host electro-house charged Monday nights at Pacha this summer. To get you in the mood, they have just released a collaboration which is a likely contender for every Ibiza playlist this year. 'Leave the world behind' features Deborah Cox on vocals and is out now.

2. Fedde le Grand feat. Mitch Crown
Hot on the heels of summer 2007's infectious 'Put your hands up for Detroit', Fedde le Grand is back with an electro-influenced party anthem we are certain to be dancing to all summer long. Moreover, he is bringing his hugely successful Flamingo Nights party to Pacha on Tuesday night. His new single, 'Scared of me' is out now.

Released yesterday, could this be the anthem of the summer? When David Guetta teams up with one of America's biggest voices, you know the result is going to be something special. The lady herself will be doing live PAs at Pacha throughout the summer on Thursday at F*** me I'm Famous. 'When Love Takes Over', you'll be singing this in your sleep.
